2017 XXL Freshman Class Voting Begins!
Since the early year of 2007, XXL Magazine has been hosting the XXL Freshman Class, a listing of the biggest, trendiest, and most successful new Hip Hop artists of the year.
In previous years, the lists have contained artists who would go on to become some of the greatest names in Hip Hop for this generation, such as J. Cole in 2010, Kendrick Lamar and Mac Miller in 2011, Future in 2012, and many more internationally admired artists. Bottom line is, it’s an honor to make it in the XXL Freshman Class. With each class comes an iconic magazine cover featuring each of the artists, freestyle session videos that gain millions of views on XXL’s YouTube channel, exclusive interviews of each of the artists, and an exciting live performance from all of the “freshmen” hosted by XXL. Around this time in spring every year, Hip Hop fans with all tastes from all over the world come together on the Internet to discuss, debate, and determine who will make the XXL Freshman Class in the summer. This year, however, there has been an insane anticipation for the release of the list. Now that voting has finally begun, the rage that sat boiling in the core of Hip Hop has suddenly erupted, as fans are doing all they can to make sure their favorite artists get a spot in this year’s class.
Fans began discussing the 2017 XXL Freshman Class in December 2016, which was oddly early for the topic to arise. This mostly occurred because of the actions of a couple of mischievous social media users who created fake XXL Freshman Class “Pre-Lists.”
I noticed so much buzz in the air about the lists and their questionable authenticity that I took it upon myself to a bit of research and prove the lists fake on my YouTube account (HomieRyan) in late December. In a short amount of time, the video had gained over 100,000 views from fans, some disappointed that the lists are fake while others just saw it as a light of hope that their favorite artists still had a shot at earning a spot on the official list. After seeing how many views were flooding in everyday leading up to voting time, it was clear that 2017 would be a wild year for XXL.
Just yesterday on March 27, XXL Magazine announced that voting for the 10th spot in this year’s Freshman Class is officially available to everybody on their website. Myriad artists appear as surprise selections in the ballot, including a few artists from the fake lists. These artists were given the opportunity to pitch themselves on XXL’s YouTube channel, giving viewers the reasons why they believe they are worthy of a precious position in the 2017 class. Determined artists like Famous Dex, Ski Mask The Slump God, and Dice Soho have already begun pushing themselves on Instagram and Twitter to reach out to their fans and get them to vote.
